Uh Oh! Thatã¢â‚¬â„¢s Naughty. Please Try Again..

Here's an extract from my guide on TTT's... allow me know if you want the full version :thumbup:

Riding Team Fourth dimension Trials are an art grade. It’southward then much more hard to ride together effectively, especially for riders used to racing solo. Aye, you’ll go round without technique, simply probably not much quicker than on your own. A expert 2up should be able to go at least two minutes or more faster than solo over 25 miles. That’southward a big difference! There’s a lot of dissimilar techniques that add together upwardly to make that time. Took me years to get it right, and only so by riding with much more than experienced riders and getting an accented shoeing - only hurting is the quickest way to larn things! TTT’s are awesome training for solo fourth dimension trials, especially if y'all ride with faster riders. If you need a kick up the bum or a shock to the system to move upward a gear; perfect! They’re proficient early on season as well for the same reason, plus it takes the force per unit area off performing on your own when not firing on all cylinders all the same.

To ride a textbook TTT you should e'er peel off into the wind, and information technology is faster that way for sure as that means the echelon is in the lee of the wind, and the riders backside get the most shelter/recovery possible.

The leading riders route position should reflect the wind direction, closer to the centre of the road if the air current is coming from the right hand side to let room for the others on the inside. The rider behind should be 6†to the outside/inside and no more than 1ft behind, preferably much less, but get with what’s comfortable.

However to start with I think its far easier and safer, and probably faster, sticking to ane echelon/rotation, and always peeling off to the inside. Irresolute echelon direction throughout the race can cause confusion – I’ve heard of very experienced riders striking the deck considering they’ve peeled off in the wrong direction and touched wheels – like shooting fish in a barrel to do when you can’t come across through sweat and can’t hear annihilation. Its too easier to become used to ‘catching the wheel’ if its ever on the same side, and its less unsafe with car drivers approaching from behind, than seeing a line of riders and suddenly one of them popping out into the middle of the road!

Something we gave a lot of attention to over the final few years Team Time Trialling was shelter – information technology isn’t obvious! Bated from sideways wind direction, tailwinds and headwinds demand some thought. In a tailwind, merely put, the riders behind become much less do good from shelter considering there is less to shelter from! Its expert to note because faster riders might have to dorsum off to save crucifying the others. With headwinds there is more benefit from shelter then you tin can go harder on the front!

Different sizes of riders should also be noted when deciding which lodge to start. Nosotros put the slowest starting rider at the forepart on the start line. Might sound donkey about face, simply if they’re at the back and yous drop them past 20 meters before you notice, how does that aid? You’ll loose five seconds straight away. Better off all flying past him after a few meters and him communicable onto the back when there’s a slipstream to benefit from! Another affair to recall almost is that a large rider is going to have to be very strong to cope with sitting behind a curt thin rider for the whole race equally he’s going to get little shelter.

Length of turn; I’d recommend for time triallists to spend at to the lowest degree 40 seconds in front end, upwards to a infinitesimal. Unless you regularly ride route races or concatenation gangs you wont have a brusque burst speed (not a repeatable i anyhow), but will be able to maintain a loftier speed for a minute easily. If you’re all doing 10 seconds or 10 rev/whatever turns, every bit far equally I’g concerned yous may equally well be riding alongside each other virtually – where does the shelter and recovery come into it so y'all tin make a harder effort? As for stride when youre on the front? Easiest way I can describe information technology is your ½ mile to go finishing try. Non quite apartment out. That existence said, reflect the riders around you. I rode a 3up a few years agone with two slightly faster riders. They did xl second turns, just when I came through I just stayed on the front for 10 sec or and so at my ‘approaching the end line’ step then pulled over. It worked better then because the speed was consequent. I think that’south i of the most important factors, keeping smooth and consistent. No matter what diverseness there is in a team, there will exist a certain pace in the centre footing where the faster riders ride longer and the slower or tired riders accept shorter turns, keeping the speed steady and all riders coming through and non missing a turn which causes big disruption.

An old aphorism is that a team is just as fast as the slowest rider. Non at all, if you think information technology through and ride correctly. I did a 51 minute 25m 4up when I don’t think I’d done a 56 solo, and a 48 infinitesimal 3up earlier I’d done a 51 solo almost 10 years afterwards!

When the leading rider wants to skin off, the riders behind will be more or less expecting it, simply its best to betoken in someway. Roadies flick an elbow out, but you cant (easily) equally you’re on the tri confined! Two suggestions; Yous should ideally check nether your arm/saddle anyway to double bank check which side the wheel behind is on anyhow, and as a long tailed aero helmet sticks up visibly when you do this, it’s a good indication. Only trouble tin be is if you look downward to cheque what gear you’re in, you’re team mate will come flying by! The other way is only earlier you pull over, finish peddling for a split second, then pull over. When you have peeled off, don’t boring down too much! Tempting as it may seem to freewheel, don’t. You’ll simply take to kick harder to become back on. Instead drop back slowly. To the next pearl of wisdom I picked up from a squad mate;

Aim for the rear wheel axle with your front tyre when trying to become dorsum on! When you’re admittedly out of your box, it can be very difficult to get on the back of the wheel inching away from you, so that’s the rule I used to make it close enough behind. Also, plan to overshoot! As you move from the within to immediately take position up again on the outside of the leading cycle, do it in one movement. Instead of getting up to speed, then moving behind the wheel in front, employ the slipstream equally early every bit possible and kicking at exactly the same fourth dimension equally you cross beyond the back wheel – you get upwards to speed instantly!

Coming through; The rider backside should never accelerate to come past, rather the passenger behind should maintain the step until their team mate is sat nicely on their back wheel, and so gradually choice information technology up if you can/want to. Boot through is past far the most common fault in TTT riding, and can accident a team to $.25 in a few miles if a fast rider is the culprit. Doesn’t matter how experienced you all are, with all the adrenaline on the offset and fresh legs you only want to go for information technology. Give them i chance maybe, but if they coming flying by you again leaving you sprinting to get on, brand sure you lot tell them, or it’ll impale you v miles downward the road.

Don’t impact the brakes! You’ll typically overdo it and have to kick to option speed upwardly again. You shouldn’t be able to anyway as you should exist on the tri bars even when on the back. If you’re positioned correctly 6†outside the rider in front just move out slightly further into the airstream and you will wearisome downwardly straight abroad to terminate yous riding into the back of the rider in front end. I manner to teach yourself this is to ride the track; you lot presently learn when you have no brakes to rely on!

Self preservation! I know it’due south a team issue, and if you lot go faster, you’ll both/all go faster, simply only short term! Look later on yourself. Don’t expend more endeavor than you have to, and as a duo/tri/quartet whatever you will become faster!

In a higher place all, communicate! You never actually know how you’re going to fair until the hammer goes downwards off the start line, so you’ll need to talk to each other. It’s very difficult at 30mph with an aero helmet on, but nevertheless. Especially if you’re starting to suffer – don’t wait until your legs are diddled to $.25, that’s far too late and you’ll be useless for the remainder of the race. If you need the other passenger(s) to take longer turns on the front end then ask them! The worst thing to practice is look until they pull off and but shout ‘can’t!’ or similar, they’ll be in a right mess too then! Ego will mean that you won’t desire to admit you’re suffering…. Just if y'all get shelled out the back your ego volition take a bigger boot!

Don’t change over at the lesser of a colina – the ane coming off the front end will have just done a stint, but wont go recovery going uphill. You’ll probably want to modify again over the top, it feels natural, and then it’due south the same rider on the front again – without a balance for several minutes. That’s plenty to get into the red and not recover until after the end!

Fast summer chain gangs are splendid for TTT preparation every bit its gives you that kick and technique that pure testers are often defective.

Hope that helps!! P.S...... they hurt! :hysterical:
